Alexandria is actually located within 2 counties. The City of Alexandria County and Fairfax County. This is to maintain the politcal and geographical division. The City of Alexandria is the northern region and the most well know area is probably Old Town. Once you travel south of the beltway (I-495) you soon enter into Fairfax County, and if you travel far enough south, you reach Mount Vernon Alexandria.
